12×8 Shed Practical Uses

A shed like this, where the width is longer than the depth, is often called a ranch, workshop, or saltbox-style shed. While still a great option for classic outdoor storage, these dimensions are ideal for maintaining working spaces. Why? With the door on the wider wall, you don’t have in the layout because with the door on the wider wall you don’t have a long, narrow pathway to the back wall. If you’e a “maker” and you’re using your shed as a workspace to complete projects and create things, this size is perfect, leaving just enough room to store materials and components, room for machines such as a saw or drill press and adequate space to work. You’ll be well on your way to bringing your dreams and ideas into the world.

A shed of this size can also be developed into an 8×12 sunroom. The door can open up into a stylized space with some comfortable seating, a rug, a coffee table, some wall decor, and installed windows to enjoy the sunlight during any month of the year. An 8×12 sunroom can be used for quaint coffee dates, a quiet reading space, meditation, and more.

Determine if 12×8 Sheds are Right for your Backyard

A 12×8 gazebo wood shed is a great compromise size for yards that might not have enough room for a much larger shed, but still require an active working space. It’s also a great size for a backyard office, yoga studio, mancave or she-shed. A good way to determine the best shed size for your back yard is to evaluate these three key factors:

  1. Examine your backyard space. Consider that you should leave a minimum of three feet around all sides of the shed for ease of passage. A shed of this size often works well at the very back corner of a property.
  2. Evaluate the quantity and size of all items you would envision storing or installing in the shed.
  3. Consider how you will use the shed. Will it be a storage space, a working space, an entertainment space, or a hybrid?
